Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (APC Kano South) was elected into the Senate from Kano South in 2007 under the then All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was a founding member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) playing a paramount role for it emergence. An experienced politician, he is one of the senators that have been elected and re-elected and by his victory in the just concluded national assembly election, going to the senate for the fourth time.
His credential as senator of the federal republic is so intimidating that it sends fears to the spines of opponents when it’s thought of. He has seen politics from the executive point; he was elected governor of Kano State in 1992 on the platform of National Republican Convention (NRC). And was cut short by the military in November 1993.
As a senator, has held many positions at committee level. Senator Kabiru Gaya was Senate’s Deputy Whip from 2007-2011, the vice- chairman, Local and Foreign Debts, chairman States and Local Government Administration in the Senate 2011-2015; the position he used to return peace to Rivers State when there was political tussle in the state House of Assembly, resulting in the Senate taking over legislative activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly until normalcy was returned.
He Co-chaired the Pension Committee of the Senate for the pension conundrum in the country. It is on record that Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya has 16 local government areas, the largest senatorial zone in Nigeria, bigger than four states from other zones in the country. He is the ad-hoc committee chairman on Southern Kaduna Crisis and other states. He was also chairman ad-hoc committee on Local and Foreign Debts ensuring facilities for Lagos and Edo States.
Upon his inauguration at the senate in 2015, he became first African to be elected Vice –president Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) African Group after being is a proud member of the over 100 year’s world body.
He is a senator that believes in Nigeria and Nigerians considering the country as his constituency. As believer in his party’s manifesto to rid the country of financial ills, he sponsored a bill to establish a separate court for speedy trial of financial offences that 8th Senate didn’t do much for the passage of the bill, but as deputy senate president, he will ensure that the vision of Mr. President for the country has accelerated attention.
If the 9th Senate is inaugurated with Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya as deputy Senate president, the change that Nigerians clamoured for will begin to emerge. The APC will indeed show Nigerians that their support for it will not be in vain that the next level of development is achievable.
