Kidnappings: Birnin-Gwari, Chikun Villagers Cry Out, Take Protest Letter to Sen. Shehu Sani
Worried by the spate of killings and frequent incidents of kidnappings , the inhabitants of Birnin-Gwari and Chikun local government areas on Tuesday stormed Kaduna residents of the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District to present letter of complaints.
The delegation drawn from most affected villages in the two local government areas said they are tired of endless waiting for government action that is not forthcoming ,hence the decision to write the letter that contains all their demands .
According to leader of the delegation, Malam Nasir Khalid said in last three months over 40 persons have been kidnapped and ransom paid for some ,but others are still in captivity.
He also said most disturbing is that the kidnappers have continued to raid villages ,kill and kidnap residents unhindered .
The delegation which submitted the Letter for onward delivery to the Senate for immediate intervention .
” We want the Senator to known that there are soldiers in Birnin-Gwari town , but they don’t protect us in the villages .It is worst to the extent the kidnappers will give notice before their coming and they will come and operate for hours without interruption.
” The last attack was two weeks ago and it was devastating because 30 persons were kidnapped including two pregnant women and ten children.
“If nothing is done now to stop this ugly incidents of kidnapping, killing and banditry at Birnin-Gwari local government area, it obvious that our source of income which is basically farming will be cut off,” he said
In his response , the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani blamed northern political leaders for the deteriorating situation and calamity befalling the region as a result of their lukewarm attitude towards addressing the issues.
According to him , one of the problems is sycophancy ,which is now making the north to bleed in insecurity.
“We have no Jonathan or Obasanjo to blame for the insecurity in the north today”, Shehu Sani said.
Shehu Sani who frowned at the level of insecurity in the region said the residents must rise to question and challenge those in the position of authority to do what is right.
“Kidnapping is what we used to hear from a far distance in the Niger Delta and South Eastern part of the country in the last fifteen to twenty years.
” When people are facing this kind of danger and tragedy, the must ideal is to face the situation and question those that we have elected into position of authority.
“The situation in Birnin Gwari is one that reflect the tragedy and danger that we are facing in the northern part of the country today.
” Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Kajuru, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger and some part of Sokoto state are under siege .
” Northern Nigeria today is under siege, in the North-West, there are issues of banditry. In the North-Central, there are issues of herdsmen, while in the North-Eastern Nigeria, there are terrorism.
” If the Federal Government is responsive to Zamfara issues, it is because the state government has admitted that the state is under siege of banditry and kidnappers”, Shehu Sani lamented.
