Northern Groups Back Senator Ahmed Lawan’s Quest for Senate President’s Seat

Northern groups under aegis of the Joint Consultative Forum of Northern Youth Groups has thrown its weight behind the quest of Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State to be the President of the 9th Senate.
In the communique issued and jointly signed by Isah Imam Muhammed , Zainab Aliyu Sabon-Birni, Director of Media and Publication and Chairperson, Communique Committee after a one day exhaustive deliberations meeting of the Joint Consultative Forum of Northern Youth Groups’ affiliate members from the 19 Northern States and Abuja held on 23 April, 2019 at Arewa House, Kaduna, the Forum said it discovered Senator Ahmed Lawan is the most ranking Senator, most experienced and knowledgeable from the region.
While noting that Senator Lawan has been in the National Assembly since return to democratic rule in 1999, the Forum explained; ” He grew through the ranks from a Member of the House of Representatives where he served two terms, to the Senate where he has remained consistent till date.
” He is the incumbent Senate leader who chairs several of the Senate committees without any blemish in the past and member of numerous other committees.
The Forum, which said deliberations centered on the effort being made to produce the leaderships of the 9th national Assembly, said a careful evaluation of all the contenders for the coveted seat in the senate and found all of them for the Senate President seat to be distinguished Senators of impeccable character, with the experience and wherewithal to give a credible leadership in the 9th Senate.
However, the Forum observed that it can only be fair and in line with conventions, to choose one among all the contending Senators, who we believe has the experience, knowledge, foresight, aura and charisma to provide the kind of leadership in the 9th Senate that will lead to a much better Nigeria, hence it Zeroed in on Senator Lawan .
The Forum explained : “Senator Lawan is known for his party loyalism; he has never defected from his political party, and we believe he would never encourage others to do same to destabilize their party and cause national unrest as seen in the past. So, even the opposition should be supporting him as a leader in their own interest.
“These attest to the fact that Senator Ahmed Lawan is not only respected and adored at his home state, but he is a lawmaker who his people and immediate constituency relied upon for proactive leadership.
“Given the Senator’s experience, pedigree and his impeccable credentials over the years, it is pertinent to state that Senator Lawan cannot be anybody’s stooge as a Senate President.
“The Forum therefore strongly believed that the insinuation in some quarters that he would be remote-controlled by unseen hands is false and cheap blackmail that holds no water.
“Lawan’s consistency in vying for the Senate President is in tandem with his belief in the independence of the legislature in a democratic set up as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and expounded in the principle of separation of powers.
“Importantly, the Forum appeals to other aspirants to see reason and rally round Senator Ahmed Lawan who has the capacity to lead the 9th Senate for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.
“Ideally, every party member should be loyal to the party and support this development in the interest of peace and unity.
“Senator Lawan enjoys a lot of respect from the Executive arm of government which is a good signal of a harmonious working relationship between the two arms of government in the next dispensation.
“As youth of Nigeria who are critical stakeholders in the Nigerian project, our support for Senator Lawan is predicated on our belief that he will serve as a bridge that will unite the Senate, irrespective of party leaning.
“We believe he will deploy his experience and goodwill to bring about harmonious working relationship within and among all arms of government in the next dispensation in the interest of national unity, peace and development.”
