In a bid to push for more women participation and appointments in government , group under aegis of Women Mentoring and Leadership Initiative (WAMFOI) has urged Kaduna State Governor ,Malam Nasir El-Rufai to keep to his promise of affirmative action of 40 per cent women and people living with disabilities ,especially those who lost elections ,but did very well in their respective constituencies .
Addressing journalists on Monday at Nurses House ,Kaduna after a meeting of group , the President ,Honourable Florence Aya said, “Despite the many campaigns for increased women participation in governance and election in Nigeria as a step toward attaining the 35 per cent affirmative action, women participation remains abysmally low.”
She also said ,a situation where none of the principal officers in the current Senate is a woman and the House of Representatives has only one female principal while only 24 of 362 members are women is unfair .
However, Hon. Aya who noted that figures of women in Nigeria politics are in contrast with the situation in the country such as Rwanda ,where women make up 61 of 106 parliamentarians and Senegal where women ,65 of the 150 parliamentary seats said , “Although four of women who contested for the Senatorial seats and 9 for house of representatives in the 2019 elections , ,none clinched the seats .
While commending El-Rufai for ensuring that women played vital roles in the outgoing dispensation by appointing them as commissioners of some key ministries before the dissolution of the State cabinet such as : Ministry of Justice ,Ministry of Environment ,Ministry of Works and Housing,Ministry of Commerce ,Ministry of Women Affairs and other Special Advisers , She said WAMFOI will continue to support government in nurturing and mentoring women for political and leadership participation to be able to achieve the desire potentials ,either elective or appointive .
However , she congratulated Governor El-Rufai on his reelection and most importantly for being sensitive in choosing a woman as a running mate to serve as Deputy Governor adding ,” This shows your conviction in women’s abilities in administrative responsibilities.
She equally thanked the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe ,National Democratic Institute Lead Nigeria ,Legal Awareness Trust ,especially in pushing for the passage of the voices against Persons Prohibition Law of 2019 of which women are the most beneficiaries ,the Ministry of Women Affairs under Hajiya Hafsat Baba and Partnership to Engage ,Reform and Learn(PERL) ,Woyean and Zamani Foundation for their great contributions made to WAMFOI .
Aya who congratulated all WAMFOI members that won elections and urged them to fulfil their mandate, she also congratulated those who lost and encouraged them to build more capacity before next election .
