9th Senate Principal Officers: PDP Senators Insist on Ranking Senators, Support Sen. Gaya for Deputy Senate President
PDP Senator Meets Senator Gaya
As the countdown for inauguration of ninth Senate begins, PDP senators have insisted that any senator that will be supported by the opposition party senators for any office in the 9th Senate must be a ranking senator who knows the rudimentary of working of the senate and not new comers or rascality.
A dependable source hinted that the PDP senators met at a house of a former deputy senate president in Abuja over the weekend and reached the above decision. The opposition party senators’ stance is coming on the heels of the information that the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, (APC), Adams Oshiohmole has anointed a baby senator from Delta State for the position of deputy senate president.
The source further informed that the PDP Senators said that the former president of Nigeria Labour Congress and former governor of Edo State may have his way on the choice of Ahmed Lawal for senate president because he is also ranking senator, but any anointing of none ranking senator from Oshiohmole for any position in the 9th Senate will be resisted.
The PDP lawmakers therefore unanimously agreed that their vote will go to Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, (APC Kano South).
It will be recalled that the media was replete with report last week that the APC chairman was rooting out for Senator Omo-Agege from Delta Central whose seat in the Senate is being contested in the court. An insider from APC told our reporter that the APC national chairman’s style of choosing candidates for elective offices is what has made the party to lose Zamfara and other states to the PDP adding that it was why the reason why some party members and zonal chairmen of the party are calling for his resignation or impeachment. The source further said that if the APC chairman is allowed his way for Senator Omo-Agege who unilaterally brought thugs to the senate to steal the mace which is the authority of the house, the Senate will become a chamber for radicalism instead law making.
A chieftain of the ruling party who prefer anonymity said that if Oshiohmole is allowed to force a none ranking senator from his zone, what was obtained in the 8th Senate will be tip of the iceberg for the incoming Senate. He added that if the APC don’t put its house in order, PDP could take control of the 9th Senate which could be a disaster for the ruling party.
