By Chibueze Victor, Abakaliki
Petty traders in Ebonyi State have been said engaging in diverse attack against some tradermoni agents seen in their vicinities for not paying them the approved N10,000 tradermoni by the Federal government after their registrations.
The traders ,who called on Nigeria Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo to review the N10,000 tradermoni given to petty traders in the country, said, ” many petty traders in the state are yet to benefit from the programme while the registered ones await payments since their registrations.”
In Effium market in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, Mr. Nwoba Onwe, one of the traders who claimed he was registered to benefit from the tradermoni programme with his personal data including his name, bank details, phone number, picture and goods taken by tradermoni agent in last two months but has not received any money.
Nwoba stated that the tradermoni agents promised that he would be paid the sum N10,000 through his bank account as a petty trader from Federal government as a way of supporting his business but said up till now he has not received any money.
Nwoba further allegedly said that since after the registration till now every other petty trader especially the ruler based ones have not yet received the money from tradermoni, adding that Effium traders in particular are no longer confident with what the agents did with their personal data which they collected from them, pointing that tradermoni has been launched in other states to the extent traders almost immediately collect their money at the point of their own registrations.
He explained that the reason why traders aggressively surrounded one lady who is allegedly the tradermoni agent, Mrs. Blessing Eze “is because she was among the agents who came and collected their personal details two months ago and we want her to explain to us what is happening, nobody is beating her but the traders really are not happy.”
Another trader, Mrs. Rose odah said, the day the tradermoni agents came for the registration she suspected them to be one of those fraudulent agents going from one rural market to another trying to use tradermoni to collect petty traders money from them because she has not heard of such thing before.
Uche Echem allegedly added, “many from the axis have suffered heils in the last N-Power application, where thousands of Ebonyians were directed by the agents to open account with one bank (name withheld) at Zik Avenue, Abakaliki but later not seen any profit till date. I don’t think 50 people out of those who opened accounts with the bank were enrolled into the programme, even though they all paid some money for their registrations.”
However, Mrs Blessing Eze the alleged gripped tradermoni agent in pleading with the traders identified herself as the supervisor of tradermoni in Ebony state.
According to her, tradermoni since it was launched in Ebonyi state has been paying the registered traders, pleaded the traders to give them some time as in her words, their phone numbers are under going verification, saying they are following the normal procedures before paying the registered ones.
Mrs. Eze further reiterated that there is need for more publicity in the rural areas on that programme for their benefits.
Relatively, about 6 traders were reported paid out of hundreds of petty traders registered in CAS cluster in Abakaliki, the state capital city as the registered traders expressed lost of confidence in the programme.
Recall that the alleged tradermoni agents were said went through heils in Okposi in Ohaozara council area of Ebonyi state as the registered traders were accused of threatened them with police.
“We were threatened with the police, summoned at the
traditional rulers palace, HRH Igwe Cosmas. We spent over 2 hours in what seemed like a Q&A session. It was already 4pm when we allowed into the market for enumeration. On getting to the market we encountered so much resistance from the market people not until they were informed that we have been cleared by the traditional rulers.”
Note that, Okposi is about 2 hours drive from Ebonyi state capital city, Abakaliki; yet the community Youth president, Kelechi Oduma who recused Mrs. Blessing Eze, the alleged tradermoni agent from been beating by the traders in the area, said, he just heard of the programme for the first time.
He therefore, called on Federal government to create more awareness about the programme to avert any further form of embrasment from traders to their agents especially the supervisor, Mrs. Blessing Eze, who has been falling in the hands of the aggrieved registered traders.
