Ebonyi, Rivers Benefit from UN Women Rice Farming Programme

Ebonyi and Rivers States’ women, this year became the chosen beneficiaries of the agriculture empowerment programme on rice farming and production by the United Nation Women Mission Initiative.
The empowerment programme which captured the two states as only qualified in the country was flagged off today
by Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi at Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre, Abakaliki.
According to Governor Umahi who was represented by the Secretary to Ebonyi State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, the programme was in line with the state government’s policies on women participation in Agriculture practice, which had already a one day programme organized by Ebonyi State Investment Team in collaboration with the United Nations Women Mission Initiative.
The governor added that the event was for the support of the government’s effort in promoting women empowerment through Rice farming and production.
He noted that the empowerment initiative programme captured only Ebonyi and River States as the only two qualified states in the country.
He thanked the Pioneers of the United Nations women mission initiative for choosing Ebonyi and River states as the only two States qualified for the training, stressing that, the women would be empowered after the training.
Umahi further explained that in Ebonyi state, Agricultural activities are not only strictly meant for men but it involves everybody which the women are not left out as he advised the women to queue into the programme by utilizing the opportunity very well; saying that, days are gone when people are ignorant of the importance of Agricultural practices.
In the same vein, the team Leader of United Nations women mission initiative, Ebonyi State Chapter, doubles as the Special Assistant to the Governor on Small and Medium Scale Businesses, Hon. Mrs. Ann Aligwe, extolled the effort of Governor Umahi in ensuring Ebonyi state was among the state selected for the empowerment after the training.
She equally explained that the women who selected from the thirteen local government areas of the state would be empowered with grants which in her words, would last for only three years as She also advised the beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity well by going into Agriculture mainly on rice farming and production.
