By Victor Nwegede

The Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has met with the state chairmen of all political parties, the Executives of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the leadership of Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) including the government’s representatives to harmonise the modalities of sharing Covid-19 palliatives meant for Ebonyians.

The Speaker who is also the Chairman of Ebonyi State Covid-19 Fundraising Committee said, the pallatives will be rolled out in line with the Governor’s directives while briefing newsmen after the meeting at Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Nkaleke Road, Abakaliki.

He further said, the meeting was held to discuss the sharing modalities of the pallatives with the state chairmen of the registered political parties, IPAC and CAN longside the state government representives.

He however, assured that the sharing of the pallatives will not be politicized.

According to him, “this issue of palliative is not a partisan affair at all. Our Governor said that the sharing of the pallatives will get to every stakeholders across the parties. This means that all the parties will participate in the sharing of the pallatives to enable the materials to reach the targeted audience.”

In a furthance, he commended the state Governor on his proactive measures to ensure that the pandemic is rid of from the state especially this time two cases were already recorded.

“Our governor, His Excellency, Engr. David Nweze Umahi is capable of handling any situation in the state. He has provided faskmasks. He has already provided 100,000 pieces of facemasks. And my advice to everybody is, let us continue keeping the guidelines given by NCDC.

“One, wash your hands with a running water within an interval of 20 minutes and apply hand sanitizer, stop touching your face. Two, wear your facemask in 24 hours, and cover your nose because you don’t know who is carrying the virus. Its symptom doesn’t show by face and unless you prepare yourself very well, you can’t be infected”, he advised.

Speaker Nwifuru equally harped on who would benefit from the pallatives.

“The pallative is going to be given to everybody but with a little difference. It has a little difference because if you are earning salary, it means people have already laboured for you to earn that salary. As a member of this Assembly, I am the Speaker and elected by people. The people suffered to elect me to represent them in this Assembly. And having always got my salary in every month, I should allow those who are neither Civil Servants nor public servants to benefit first. So, it is only those who are not working should expect the pallatives now, even though, workers may get their own, based on our governor’s benevolence. But for now, I am still soliciting that workers to be patience to enable our people who are not salary earners to benefit first”, he urged.

Interacting with journalists, the State PDP Chairman, Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi as well said, the meeting was held at the instances of Governor Umahi being represented by the Speaker.

He also disclosed that all the leaders of political parties who attended the meeting have to agree on the sharing modalities.

“The APC state chairman was there, and various parties’ leaders. We are assured that the sharing of the pallatives will not be politicized. That is the major reasons of being there. It is certain, the meeting cuts across parties. The state IPAC chairman, APC and all other registered paries in Ebonyi State were there. The parties were equitably represented by the chairmen, including the CAN Chairman. The main thing is to ensure that nobody hijacked the pallatives”, the PDP Boss said.

Meanwhile, other leaders of various political parties present during the meeting also confirmed that the gathering was for the interest of all Ebonyians and called for a collective support in the fight against the global ravaging pandemic, believing that the palliatives would be shared soon.
