By Victor Nwegede
Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires (NLCOC), Ebonyi State Command has appealed to the state government for provision of permanent site and other facilities to enable the command to render more selfless services to the society.
NLCOC made the appeal through her state Commandant, Corps Commander Akeem I. Opaleye on the occasion of his decoration ceremony on Friday at Abakaliki following the change of baton in the Command.
The new Commandant appealed to Governor David Nweze Umahi to consider allocating to the Command a parcel of land to domicile her headquarters because the costs of her present premises keep rising and posing much expenses for on the members.
He informed the governor that the Command’s only operational vehicle which was purchased by her members has gotten old and cannot perform rugged tasks.
He however, requested the governor to consider providing the command with modern operational vehicles to enable the corps discharging her responsibilities smoothly in the state.
Akeem also appealed to Umahi to assign the Corps a responsibility in the state, as in his words; “there are still areas where security and maintenance of law and order are needed in the state such as in our school, inter-communal peaceful co-existence, community policing and conflict resolution, among others.
“These young and zealous professionals cannot be left to waste away whereas government has a lot of challenges in the above regards. It is obvious the cost of maintaining the officers and men in the command will be far very cheap to government, hence, the need for government to patronize the Corps of Commissionaires.”
Responding, Governor David Umahi being represented by the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Internal Security, Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Barr. Ogbonnaya Otah, assured the Corps that his government would do everything human possible to continue assisting them and promised to communicate back as he commended their support with other security outfits to combat insecurities in the state and beyond.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Planning Committee of the occasion, Assistant Corps Commander Raphael I. Ngwoke, has described the event as a very significant one and also explained Corps of Commissionaires as an arm of the military and conglomeration of young professionals, the old people, the retired persons not active for service but have several key roles to render in the society to install stable security and peaceful co-existence.
