Rt. Hon. Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Professor Joseph Albasu Kunini, has expressed dismay on the general apathy that has trailed the ongoing online nationwide voters registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking on Monday, 7th February, 2022 at Lau Stakeholders Forum meeting in Jalingo, the State capital, the Speaker who is member representing Lau Constituency stated that more worrisome was the rating of Taraba as the least among the 36 states of the federation and Lau the least among the 16 local government areas in the voters registration exercise.
“The general apathy that trails the ongoing online nationwide voters registration exercise is worrisome,; some people even expect monetary inducement for them to register as voters at elections.
“This is an unpatriotic act, because voters registration is a civic duty for every citizen in the country.
“Therefore, I urge members of the Lau Stakeholders Forum to join forces to reverse the ugly trend in Lau local government area in particular and the State generally,” he stressed.
The meeting which was chaired by Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of Lau local government area, Pastor Emmanuel D. Umar, attracted many stakeholders from the ten wards of the area.
In his opening remark, the Chairman of the PDP disclosed that the meeting was convened to discuss the directive given by Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku that stakeholders across the State should sensitize and mobilize the people to partake on the ongoing online nationwide votets registration exercise by INEC.
