Nigerian Students In Northern Cyprus Lament Suicide Rate, Racial Discrimination

Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus are lamenting the increase in suicide rates among them and racial discrimination experienced by them in the country.

This was revealed in a statement from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, on Wednesday.

NIDCOM said members of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Ambassador raised the alarm during a visit to the Commission chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja.

Part of the statement read, “The president of the association, Mr. David Alozie, who led a four-man delegation to Hon. (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman, CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in Abuja, said the purpose of the visit to the commission is to appeal for quick intervention on the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.”

Alozie added that Nigerian students were being racially profiled, deported on arrival and are forced to pay for tuition in Pounds while other foreign students pay in Turkish Lira.

It was revealed that the discriminatory treatment has resulted in depression among the students which has in turn led to a spike in suicide rates.
